2011-12 NHL Goalie Mask Rankings

There is much to love about those crazy crease bandits, but one thing that sets goalies apart is their beautiful mask art. Some tendies are in need of a serious mask makeover, while others have nailed it. Here are my rankings on starting NHL goalies in team alphabetical order starting with the first 15 teams. I ranked them on a scale from 1-5, five being supreme.

Anaheim Duck: Jonas Hiller by Airxess, Score 3

I simply do not get his regular mask. There is no clear theme or purpose; however his Movember art was fantastic. The November mask displays Ducks’ player profile pictures with moustaches painted on their faces. I love it. Combining the two persuaded me to give him a solid 3 out of 5. Read more

Games of Ones: A Decade of Stanley Cup Series Openers

Today is the day hockey fans have been waiting for…the Stanley Cup Finals. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m. in Newark between the L.A. Kings and New Jersey Devils. (By the way, how many of you guessed that duo?)

The home team has won Game One for six consecutive years. Will the Devils claim the series opener tonight? Kings have won all 8 playoff games on the road this post season. As we await the results, enjoy a brief history and some video on the past decade of Game Ones:

2011 – Boston Bruins vs Vancouver Canucks

  • Vancouver win this game at home with a late goal in the third to shutout Boston 1-0.
  • Bruins won the Cup 4-3.

2010 – Chicago Blackhawks vs Philadelphia Flyers

  • Troy Brouwer scored his second goal of the game for Chicago to take the lead 5-4 in the second.
  • Hawks eventually won  Game One at home 6-5.
  • Blackhawks won the Cup 4-2.

The NHL will host eight games Thursday evening and here’s a quick and interesting look at each matchup based on some fun numbers.

Avalanche vs Devils (7pm EST)

  • These 2 teams will be meeting for the 2nd and final time this season.
  • New Jersey has played in 2 less games than Colorado (70-72), but have 2 more victories this season than the Avalanche (40-38).
  • Colorado’s Steve Downie, Milan Hejduk, and Kyle Quincey (2 helpers) each have 2 points in the previous contest. Ryan O’Reilly is the only Avs’ player to boast more with three points. Read more
