NHL Player Twitter Scorecard: Carolina Hurricanes

twitter iconSocial media has significantly impacted the player-fan experience. Fans are now able to interact and keep tabs on their favorite players. So, what NHL players are really conquering on Twitter? We thought it would be fun to rank each player by team based on two simple criteria:

  1. Number of followers
  2. Number of tweets

A player may have a Twitter account with a ton of followers, but rarely tweets. Therefore, we weighted the criteria. The number of tweets counts for 60%, while the number of followers accounts for 40%. For a player to qualify they have to be listed on the official team website as having an account and they must have seen ice time (NHL or the AHL affiliate) in the 2013 season. Read more

Hockey Hearts Needed

cameron stealIf you’re lucky, there is a moment in your life where you stand tall. You hold your chest high and feel a true moment of pride. I’ve felt this moment twice in my life and it’s wondrous that both moments were graciously given to me by the Williams’ Family.

I worked for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and I did my job. I showed up at UNC and Duke Hospital three times a week to be an advocate for families dealing with various forms of neuromuscular diseases. I provided smiles, motivation, and resources when needed. I did my job.

Cameron Williams turned out to be much more than a job. He was more than a boy fighting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). He was more than a 15-year-old in a wheelchair. He was more than a student and hockey player. He was more than a smile itching to be captured by the finest artist. He was a son, brother, nephew, grandson, and friend. Most importantly, he would be an angel for families fighting DMD. Read more

NHL Season Starts with Shock and Awe

The day arrived more than fashionably late, but the start of the 2013 NHL season thrilled and disappointed fans equally. Despite many players playing in the AHL or KHL during the lockout, plenty of rusty blades were painfully evident. However, it was a handful of veterans and rookies that made the day memorable.

The shock…

  • St Louis clipped Detroit’s wings with the solo shutout of the day. It was a shutout and a slap in the face as the Blues won 6-0. Jaroslav Halak earned his first shutout of the season by stopping a mere 14 shots. Chris Stewart and Tarasenko each claimed an impressive two goals.
  • Cory Schneider allowed five goals on 14 shots in 26 minutes and was relieved by the controversial Roberto Luongo. Luongo allowed two goals on 12 shots in Anaheim’s 7-3 win.
  • Puck Daddy predicted the Carolina Hurricanes to win the Southeast division, but the team had a lackluster performance despite the addition of Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin. Old Faithful Cam Ward allowed four goals in 20 minutes. Dan Ellis replaced Ward in the net going into the second period, but the Canes went on to lose 5-1 to the Florida Panthers. Read more

Just like a tasty tweet, this shirt was baked fresh for your pleasure. Available in mens crewneck and ladies v-neck.

If you are on Twitter, you quickly realize it can be cumbersome to get up with the rapid-fire timeline. If you are not on Twiiter, then you are most certainly missing out on some juicy tweets. Here are some of my favorite hockey tweets from this past week…

The ever-entertaining goalie, Bobby Goepfert, got married yesterday and his tweets before the ceremony were knne-slappers. Mr. Goepfert currently plays for the DEG Metro Stars in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga.

NHL’s Most Thrilling Mind-Numbing Event of the Year

Bikini League prospect, Candance Warn Courtesy of BHL

For fans, and certain blog writers, the NHL Entry Draft was simply dull this weekend. I mean no disrespect to the young, talented prospects of the 2012 NHL Draft, but watching the draft this year was like watching a study group cram for the SATs. Even Ryan Murray looked quite sullen as the second overall pick (Columbus Blue Jackets), but who can blame him. Of course, I’m mostly kidding here. These guys, along with their families, worked very hard for this day and I send my congratulations.

The news that earned the biggest reaction was Carolina’s trade with Pittsburgh to acquire Jordan Staal for Canes’ Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin, and the 8th overall pick. Check out this Puck Daddy article for a reaction recap from both fan bases. Day 2 of the draft saw Luke Schenn of the Leafs head to Philadelphia in exchange for James van Riemsdyk. The Edmonton Oilers snagged winger Nail Yakupov as the #1 pick to add to their amazing Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins winning draft picks. And there you have it…the most thrilling news from the two day event. Read more

2011-12 NHL Goalie Mask Rankings

Cam Ward inspired charity tee by EYECANDYAIR at www.outeredgethreads.com. Watermark not included on actual shirt.

There is much to love about those crazy crease bandits, but one thing that sets goalies apart is their beautiful mask art. Some tendies are in need of a serious mask makeover, while others have nailed it. Here are my rankings on starting NHL goalies in team alphabetical order starting with the first 15 teams. I ranked them on a scale from 1-5, five being supreme.

I must give thanks and encourage you to follow I Love Goalies and The Goalie Crease Network. They made my research easy peazy. Click on the player name to view the mask on the I Love Goalies blog.

Anaheim Duck: Jonas Hiller by Airxess, Score 3

I simply do not get his regular mask. There is no clear theme or purpose; however his Movember art was fantastic. The November mask displays Ducks’ player profile pictures with moustaches painted on their faces. I love it. Combining the two persuaded me to give him a solid 3 out of 5. Read more

September 7, 2012: Rene Fasel, president of the IIHF, claimed, “This is the darkest day in the history of our sport.” On Wednesday, Spetember 7th 43 people died in a plane crash, including 27 players of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. Behind the Design: Just Say Flow

Some cry over spilled milk (or beer). Some tear up at those depressing American Humane Society commercials (or just writing about it, tissues please). You know what really gets me? I tear up at the loss of flowing locks. Those precious wings that stick out in just the right places of a hockey helmet and often sheared at the end of a season. Damn tragedy.

Ladies, I don’t mean to ignore your flow here, as I adore seeing those ponytails down the back of jerseys. Although, I don’t like mine when my skating coach threatens to tie my locks to my pants to keep my head up. The threat alone is quite effective.

This design was inspired by two events. First, Carolina Hurricanes’ Justin Faulk’s end of season haircut tweet on Twitter. The man has a gorgeous head of hair. Head & Shoulders will soon forget their commercials with Tuomo Ruutu and Henrik Lundqvist if they get their hands on Mr. Faulk. As a Canes’ fan I was quite disappointed in the below tweet, but at least he followed it up with a solid promise. Read more
