The Ambidextrous Sport of Hockey

You’re no better than a plastic player attached to a pole without ambidextrous feet in hockey.

I have yet to meet a skater that’s denied the early struggles of getting one foot up to par with the other stronger foot. Whether it was feeling as smooth on that outside edge or stopping as quick, one foot stubbornly resisted to conform. Without downplaying the skill required of other sports, having ambidextrous feet is one of the many reasons I respect the game of hockey.

Players shoot with their strong arm in basketball. You never see a righty take a free throw shot his left hand for giggles. An NFL quarterback throws passes with his strong arm. I doubt you’ll hear Tom Brady tell his receivers, “Hey guys, watch this, I’m going to attempt a 30 yard pass with my left arm.” Although there are switch-hitters in baseball, they still throw with their dominate arm. Speaking of baseball, check out this video on the rare ambidextrous pitcher, Pat Venditte:

Very few sports require players be ambidextrous and hockey is definitely one of those sports. It’s pretty funny if you think about, could you imagine players only stopping, turning, transitioning, etc… to their right? It would be like a blooper reel with pucks whizzing past them with blindsided hits. It reminds me of a foosball table with those little plastic players that can only move in limited directions. OET Launches as Underdogs

Logo by Joe Warner of 89 Ideas

On Sunday, June 17th, the Outer Edge Threads website went live after eight months of hard work. I popped about ten anti-acids and prayed to the hockey gods that the world would find my work…nice…yes, I’ll take nice for now, because let’s be honest here…

OET went in as the underdog. I’m not making gear “for the boys, by the boys.” Nope, last time I checked I was definitely a female and I focus more on the ladies of the ice. My company also isn’t based in northern hockey country, rather the good ‘ol south of U.S. of A. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when we launched. To add to my stress, I entered OET is a best business social media competition against companies that were already in business and have customers. Do you see why the anti-acids were important? Behind the Design: Fresh Baked

Fresh Baked coming this June. Image by OET

This concept was based on the “Mad Men” marketing style days and thanks to my pal, John Howard, I think it came together quite nicely. This shirt is a salute to those fresh wheels. Plus, it’s like hot coco for your feet when you’re getting it done.

Mr. Howard is a talented graphic artist based out of Charlotte, North Carolina and has been my friend for years. I was thrilled to have him design this line. You must check out his work at www.johnshoward.com.

The shirt will be available in a baby blue mens crewneck and a ladies baby blue v-neck. Both shirts are American made, fashion-fit, and high quality. Read more
