The day arrived more than fashionably late, but the start of the 2013 NHL season thrilled and disappointed fans equally. Despite many players playing in the AHL or KHL during the lockout, plenty of rusty blades were painfully evident. However, it was a handful of veterans and rookies that made the day memorable.

The shock…

  • St Louis clipped Detroit’s wings with the solo shutout of the day. It was a shutout and a slap in the face as the Blues won 6-0. Jaroslav Halak earned his first shutout of the season by stopping a mere 14 shots. Chris Stewart and Tarasenko each claimed an impressive two goals.
  • Cory Schneider allowed five goals on 14 shots in 26 minutes and was relieved by the controversial Roberto Luongo. Luongo allowed two goals on 12 shots in Anaheim’s 7-3 win.
  • Puck Daddy predicted the Carolina Hurricanes to win the Southeast division, but the team had a lackluster performance despite the addition of Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin. Old Faithful Cam Ward allowed four goals in 20 minutes. Dan Ellis replaced Ward in the net going into the second period, but the Canes went on to lose 5-1 to the Florida Panthers. Read more

Week of Hockey Tweets

It’s time for another edition of, “Week of Hockey Tweets!”

Please say this aloud in a deep, cheesy voice while holding a skinny microphone for the full effect.

Shirt of the Day: Since we are ending with a picture of Mr. Quick’s little peanut, let’s rock Good Things Come to Those Who Skate youth tee.

Behind the Design: Just Say Flow

Some cry over spilled milk (or beer). Some tear up at those depressing American Humane Society commercials (or just writing about it, tissues please). You know what really gets me? I tear up at the loss of flowing locks. Those precious wings that stick out in just the right places of a hockey helmet and often sheared at the end of a season. Damn tragedy.

Ladies, I don’t mean to ignore your flow here, as I adore seeing those ponytails down the back of jerseys. Although, I don’t like mine when my skating coach threatens to tie my locks to my pants to keep my head up. The threat alone is quite effective.

This design was inspired by two events. First, Carolina Hurricanes’ Justin Faulk’s end of season haircut tweet on Twitter. The man has a gorgeous head of hair. Head & Shoulders will soon forget their commercials with Tuomo Ruutu and Henrik Lundqvist if they get their hands on Mr. Faulk. As a Canes’ fan I was quite disappointed in the below tweet, but at least he followed it up with a solid promise. Read more

Showdown #7: King Henry vs Rookie Holtby

2012 Vezina winner?! (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Cue the rolling tumbleweeds and gun sling’in sound effects, because Game 7 between the Rangers and Capitals is going to be like an old western shootout between veteran goalie, King Henry, and rookie, Braden Holtby. Yes, this game goes beyond the crease, but the match-up is an interesting one. Read more
