Behind the Design: Lockout Survivor Threads

Lockouts suck. NHL personnel and fans alike despise every one, but they survive one lockout at a time.

Joe Warner of 89 Ideas crafted two stellar OET designs to please the masses.

You can snag one version on a crazy soft, unisex American Apparel tee or ladies can sport a design on survivor pink or a fashion fit, slate gray tee by District Threads.

Feel the Love with New Hockey Life Apparel

The birth of Outer Edge Threads in June was an exciting venture quickly dampened by the NHL Lockout, but thanks to your support our rookie line was well received and we thrilled to offer the next generation in OET apparel.

OET’s Lockout Survivor threads

We will debut our winter line with five new designs on Thursday, February 14th! We figured Valentine’s Day was an appropriate launch date since we appreciate the love, and because of you, we were able to pay that love forward.

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation, a charity that supports many North Carolina non-profits, received a donation check from OET from the Blackbeard shirt sales. Again, many thanks to EYECANDYAIR for loaning us Cam Ward’s sweet goalie mask design.

We were also able to support the Carolina Fury, a power wheelchair hockey league, thanks to your Facebook ‘likes.’

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s support over the past seven months. We received some terrific feedback and we’re excited to offer more color and size options with this new line of hockey threads.
To show our thanks, we are offering a 15% discount code active February 14th on all apparel through Sunday, February 17th. Just use the code: PEACELOVEPUCK at checkout.

Red, White & Blue Sale

The 2012 Summer Olympics kicked off Friday in London. Mr. Bean was a fantastic surprise and my favorite moment from the opening ceremonies. View it here. What a mug that guy has, eh?

Combine Mr. Bean with a killer day one of the games and we are in a great, patriotic mood. So champs, enjoy $5 off all our true red, white, and blue shirts until Sunday (7.29.12) at midnight (EST) or until supplies last. Offer is valid for all US and Canadian orders (because we love our neighbors to the north).

In case you are colored blind (poor bastards), below are the shirts on sale that have already been discounted $5 for your convenience.

Southern Creases Adult

Blackbeard Adult

Good Things Adult

Good Things Youth

Despite the discount, we will still donate 15% of the sales from Blackbeard to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Save money and donate to a fabulous charity! Tell your pals.

On a side note, was anyone else shocked at how thrilling archery was today? Or how about Michael Phelps barely qualifying? And how sick is the women’s USA soccer team? Nice little appetizer before the hockey season, no?

OET Launches as Underdogs

Logo by Joe Warner of 89 Ideas

On Sunday, June 17th, the Outer Edge Threads website went live after eight months of hard work. I popped about ten anti-acids and prayed to the hockey gods that the world would find my work…nice…yes, I’ll take nice for now, because let’s be honest here…

OET went in as the underdog. I’m not making gear “for the boys, by the boys.” Nope, last time I checked I was definitely a female and I focus more on the ladies of the ice. My company also isn’t based in northern hockey country, rather the good ‘ol south of U.S. of A. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when we launched. To add to my stress, I entered OET is a best business social media competition against companies that were already in business and have customers. Do you see why the anti-acids were important? Behind the Design: Good Things Contest

Good things come to those who wait…nah, good things come to those who skate. Unless your Tanya Harding, or Nancy Kerrigan for that matter.

Skating is a form of fantastic exercise and exercise releases happy endorphins. It also combats beer gut. I highly recommend it.

Whether your blades are of the figure or hockey skate variety, it is a mighty fine sport. Speaking as one that prefers the lack of a toe pick, hockey provides all sorts of goodness. Coaches, parents, players, and fans all benefit from this thrilling game. Lifelong lessons and friendships are coupled with personal challenges and triumphs. Outer Edge Threads salutes those accomplishments with our Good Things shirt. Read more

The Godfather of Lifestyle Hockey Apparel: Gongshow Gear

Sporting my Gongshow Gear with Charlotte Checkers' defensemen, Bobby Sanguinetti and Justin Soryal.

Alright, I am about to be brutally honest with you. The truth shall set you free…hum, we shall see.

Very few ideas are 100% original. Companies would be a monopoly in their industry if that were the case. For example, if there were only one beer supplier, we may be dishing out fifty bones for a six-pack. God forbid.

Advertisements to movies are constantly being recycled. Where would Pixar be with Walt Disney? Would there be a Sopranos series without the Godfather movies? Hell, how many crime fighting shows are on television these days? People expand off of ideas that work. The benefit of this recycling means more choices and fair prices for consumers.  Read more

Exploding on the Scene

There are some moments in life you will never forget. Experiences morphed into images, fueled by emotion, can latch onto your soul for all eternity. The passion I felt to release Outer Edge Threads into, let’s face it, an already saturated industry is best described through one of those very memories.

The date and city do not matter. I was staying with my dear friend, Nicole, and her family consisting of one hubby, three cats, and a dog. Being fellow animal lovers, Nicole confided in me that Bailey, the ever aging canine, had a cyst of sorts on her back that was quite concerning. I agreed to check it out despite her warnings of being unpleasant.

Bet you thought I was going to tell some epic hockey story of glory and honor, right?! It’s ok, we just started this relationship, we’ll know how the other takes their coffee soon enough. Anyways…

I have animals. I’m a tough cookie. No cyst could be that nasty. So, I leaned over my pal as she parted the thick hair of the german shepherd mix to expose the problem area. About a three inch radius was raised up like one killer mosquito bite. Nicole offered another warning which I brushed off with dramatic hand gestures and then watched…

Nicole strategically placed her fingers along the edges of the pimple-gone-wrong and started to push. Simple words in a simple blog will never fully grasp the horror I witnessed. A thick, pale worm made of smelly paste spewed and curled from an unseen hole. It lasted hours and I wasn’t right for days.

You may be thinking, “What in God’s name does this have to do with starting an online hockey apparel company?” That’s a great question, as I’m not quite sure…reliving that experience has scrambled my brain.

Oh yeah, I remember. Finding time between a full-time job and a freelance sports writing gig (not to mention skating, games, etc…) to start a company is not very convenient. Like Bailey’s volcanic cyst, it isn’t opportune, but something desperately wanted out of me. Yes, I’m comparing my creativity to vulgar pus.

I wanted to spread hockey love. I wanted to give stick taps to every billet family, teammate, equipment manager, fan, and coach that help make the game great. I felt I had design ideas that may do just that…I just had to get them out. Welcome baby OET to the world.

It may not always be fun. It may not always be pretty, but like Bailey’s cyst, it will be interesting. We will carry threads for adults to youth and games to glassware. OET will also feature an artist seasonally to benefit various charities. Merchandise is rolling in and I hope you enjoy. Salute!
