We kicked off a social media series last week with the best tweeters from the Carolina Hurricanes. Today we hit the Western Conference and rank the St. Louis Blues. Here’s a refresher on the criteria:

  • The player must be listed on the official team website as having a Twitter account
  • The player must have seen ice time (NHL or the AHL affiliate) in the 2013 season
  • Judging Criteria: number of followers accounts for 40%, number of tweets accounts for 60%

Overall, the Twitter action of the Blues completely deflates the storm of the Hurricanes. This made us wonder how all the teams would look measured side-by-side. Perhaps we’ll save a NHL team social media scorecard for the finale.

Anyways, here are the best (and worst) Blues’ tweeters (statistics are based on March 23rd numbers)… Read more

NHL Player Twitter Scorecard: Carolina Hurricanes

twitter iconSocial media has significantly impacted the player-fan experience. Fans are now able to interact and keep tabs on their favorite players. So, what NHL players are really conquering on Twitter? We thought it would be fun to rank each player by team based on two simple criteria:

  1. Number of followers
  2. Number of tweets

A player may have a Twitter account with a ton of followers, but rarely tweets. Therefore, we weighted the criteria. The number of tweets counts for 60%, while the number of followers accounts for 40%. For a player to qualify they have to be listed on the official team website as having an account and they must have seen ice time (NHL or the AHL affiliate) in the 2013 season. Read more

Behind the Design: Lockout Survivor Threads

Lockouts suck. NHL personnel and fans alike despise every one, but they survive one lockout at a time.

Joe Warner of 89 Ideas crafted two stellar OET designs to please the masses.

You can snag one version on a crazy soft, unisex American Apparel tee or ladies can sport a design on survivor pink or a fashion fit, slate gray tee by District Threads.

7 NHL Camp Headlines Worth Reading

Teams across the NHL picked up where they should have been in October…in camp. Organizations must quickly try to perfect their system with new players, and in some cases, new coaches (Canadiens, Flames, Oilers, and Capitals). It can be daunting to keep up with every camp, so here are 7 headlines worth reading from the Eastern Conference.

Western Conference is up next.

7 Eastern Conference Camp Headlines

#7 – Here’s the latest waiver wire news from Toronto.

#6 – There are too many men on the ice in Buffalo…or at least at camp. Find out why here.

#5 – Jordan Staal, Kevin Westgarth, and Alexander Semin may not be the only fresh faces on the Carolina Hurricanes’ roster this season as a few AHL stars battle for a spot on the team.

#4 – Get an in-depth look at Pittsburgh’s camp from The Hockey Writers here.

#3 – 17,565 fans watched the Boston Bruins fall 5-7 to their Providence Bruins farm team at TD Gardens on Tuesday. Fans were given complimentary tickets…and a complimentary fight. You can read the article here.

#2 – Scott Hartnell says fans went “bananas” at Flyers’ camp…

#1 – Lastly, the Tampa Bay Lightning discuss a serious voting scandal surrounding Vinny Lecavalier. Ok, not so camp related, but bound to make you laugh.

NHL Election Day: Who Gets Your Vote?

Does Gary Bettman get your vote? I can’t even write that with a straight face. (Photo: AP)

Finally, Election Day is here after months of slanderous political commercials, campaign signs littering every inch of grass, and the occasional funny candidate spoof on Saturday Night Live. What if you went to the polls today and saw Donald Fehr and Gary Bettman on your ballot card? Who would get your vote as the best (of the worst) leader? Perhaps you would like a more generic option, who would you take if the NHLPA was running against the NHL?

Much like the presidential election, the NHL and NHLPA are playing a ruthless game of media wars. Silly boys, the fans have been through this before (more than once unfortunately) and we aren’t buying your sh*t on a stick. I inadvertently made a stick pun (high-fives self). Absolutely no reports from either side phases me anymore. Show me action, choke on your words.

The NHL whispered sweet nothings to the fans last summer about being committed to starting the 2012-13 season on time and without delay. Yeah right, more like lies spoken with hot garbage breath. In October, the NHL made sure news of a 50/50 split (sans details) leaked to the media in an effort to appear generous and appeasing. Read more

NHL Lockout May Claim Columbus All-Star Casualty

I hope the graphic design was paid up front for this logo. (Photo via nhl.com)

Whether you hate or love the All-Star games, Columbus could suffer a fatal blow if rumors hold and the All-Star festivities are cancelled due to the lockout. The Blue Jackets are a team in desperate need of positive attention in the NHL and since it isn’t coming in the form of wins, an All-Star weekend could give the franchise a boost it needs.

Don Cherry was recently quoted saying, “I’m afraid it looks like two months. Everybody’s talking that they’re going to be out two months.” Well, crap.

Atlanta was the last city to get their All-Star weekend dismissed due to the 2004-05 lockout. Now the Thrashers are no more…just saying.

I know many fans won’t lose sleep over losing the All-Star event, but you do have to feel for Columbus. As an Ohio native, I would hate to see the fans miss out on this experience. Cross your fingers and enjoy your Buckeyes Ohioans. I dare not mention the Browns or Cavs…

Who Hits the Ice First…Players in Breezers or Players in Bikinis

Bikini League prospect, Molly via BikiniHockeyLeague.com

Remember back in May when Cary Eskridge announced he was starting a Bikini Hockey League? If not, catch up here. After a surge of interest, the new ladies league faded away like the latest trend. The only press release on their website was dated May 2nd and Google news shows nothing much after Puck Daddy’s article on May 11th.

Now, the boys of the NHL and NHLPA continued their labor negotiations today. We all know Round One went to the suits, but we are waiting to hear the counter offer. Where’s Harvey Specter when you need him?

So, who will come first this fall…the boys in gear or the babes on blades? Give us your two cents. To entertain you in the meantime, here are the Bikini League prospects.

By the way, we opened our virtual doors one month ago today. The early support has been much appreciated. We have met a lot of cool people and have some exciting things coming down the pipes. Have a cold one with us tonight and give us a shout-out on Twitter and Facebook. Thanks!

Puck by Numbers: The NHL Lockout

Peace, Love, Puck ladies tee available at www.outeredgethreads.com

The pending NHL CBA is the pink elephant in the locker room. The NHL collective bargaining agreement is a contract between the NHL team owners and the NHL Players Association (NHLPA), created through labor-management negotiations of collective bargaining. We all recall the disappointing 2004-05 season and hope not one day of the regular season will be postponed due to these labor agreements. Here are some interesting numbers associated with sports labor agreements…

0 – The number of games the NHL can afford to lose after a record revenue season in my opinion

1 – The amount times the NHL lost an entire season to labor disputes Read more

Hockey Apps: Five Favs and Five Wants

I’m sure Biebs was totally using the TSN app at the Jets game.

Mobile applications have become as popular as the latest hit album or blockbuster movie. Basically, you are missing out if you haven’t played Words with Friends or used StumbleUpon. In addition, keeping up with the latest news has never been easier whether it be your favorite team’s statistics or the local weather report.

Where does the hockey world rank in the apps world? Here are five of my favorite ones currently on the market and five I would like created…like yesterday. I linked most of these to the iTunes store, but they are also available on Androids.

Currently Available:

5. Icebreaker Hockey by NaturalMotion: Over 1,000 people ranked this game app 4+ stars on Apple App Store. It is totally worth the .99 cent price tag.

4. The Hockey Writers by Kickanotch Mobile, LLC: A free, easy to use app for all your hockey stats and articles. Plus, OET has a sexy little ad on their website. Read more

Part 2: 2011-12 NHL Goalie Mask Rankings

Pekka Rinne's mask. Copyright Dave Art via I love Goalies

While the hockey world goes into a free agency frenzy, I’m floating in the pool researching the remaining NHL goalie masks for my 2011-12 rankings. If you missed the first 15 teams, click here. It’s not that I’m not interested in the Parise or Suter rumors, I’m just a roll with the punches (or trades) kinda girl. Plus, art and poolside go together better than salary caps and poolside.

Why the obsession with tendy art? I love tattoos and creating art for your mask is a similar venture. It represents you. It’s an artistic reflection of your personality, and in this case, your game. And I’m a previous art major nerd.

Thanks again to I Love Goalies and InGoal Magazine for their great articles and pictures. Let’s pick up where we left off.. (click on the header for photos and details)

Nashville Predators: Pekka Rinne by David Gunnarsson, Score: 5

The art, colors, and Predator theme are awesomely rolled into one killer (no pun intended) mask. It does help it is on Vezina Trophy nominee, Mr. Rinne.

New Jersey Devils: Martin Brodeur by Sylvie Poitras, Score 3

Usually less is more in my book, but Marty’s art leaves me longing for a bit more. I can appreciate it more when I see detailed photos, but a great mask should look great from the crowd and on TV.   Read more
