Teams across the NHL picked up where they should have been in October…in camp. Organizations must quickly try to perfect their system with new players, and in some cases, new coaches (Canadiens, Flames, Oilers, and Capitals). It can be daunting to keep up with every camp, so here are 7 headlines worth reading from the Eastern Conference.

Western Conference is up next.

7 Eastern Conference Camp Headlines

#7 – Here’s the latest waiver wire news from Toronto.

#6 – There are too many men on the ice in Buffalo…or at least at camp. Find out why here.

#5 – Jordan Staal, Kevin Westgarth, and Alexander Semin may not be the only fresh faces on the Carolina Hurricanes’ roster this season as a few AHL stars battle for a spot on the team.

#3 – 17,565 fans watched the Boston Bruins fall 5-7 to their Providence Bruins farm team at TD Gardens on Tuesday. Fans were given complimentary tickets…and a complimentary fight. You can read the article here.

Part 2: 2011-12 NHL Goalie Mask Rankings

While the hockey world goes into a free agency frenzy, I’m floating in the pool researching the remaining NHL goalie masks for my 2011-12 rankings. If you missed the first 15 teams, click here. It’s not that I’m not interested in the Parise or Suter rumors, I’m just a roll with the punches (or trades) kinda girl. Plus, art and poolside go together better than salary caps and poolside.

Why the obsession with tendy art? I love tattoos and creating art for your mask is a similar venture. It represents you. It’s an artistic reflection of your personality, and in this case, your game. And I’m a previous art major nerd.

Thanks again to I Love Goalies and InGoal Magazine for their great articles and pictures. Let’s pick up where we left off.. (click on the header for photos and details)

Nashville Predators: Pekka Rinne by David Gunnarsson, Score: 5

The art, colors, and Predator theme are awesomely rolled into one killer (no pun intended) mask. It does help it is on Vezina Trophy nominee, Mr. Rinne.

New Jersey Devils: Martin Brodeur by Sylvie Poitras, Score 3

Usually less is more in my book, but Marty’s art leaves me longing for a bit more. I can appreciate it more when I see detailed photos, but a great mask should look great from the crowd and on TV.   Read more

NHL’s Most Thrilling Mind-Numbing Event of the Year

For fans, and certain blog writers, the NHL Entry Draft was simply dull this weekend. I mean no disrespect to the young, talented prospects of the 2012 NHL Draft, but watching the draft this year was like watching a study group cram for the SATs. Even Ryan Murray looked quite sullen as the second overall pick (Columbus Blue Jackets), but who can blame him. Of course, I’m mostly kidding here. These guys, along with their families, worked very hard for this day and I send my congratulations.

The news that earned the biggest reaction was Carolina’s trade with Pittsburgh to acquire Jordan Staal for Canes’ Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin, and the 8th overall pick. Check out this Puck Daddy article for a reaction recap from both fan bases. Day 2 of the draft saw Luke Schenn of the Leafs head to Philadelphia in exchange for James van Riemsdyk. The Edmonton Oilers snagged winger Nail Yakupov as the #1 pick to add to their amazing Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins winning draft picks. And there you have it…the most thrilling news from the two day event. Read more
